LLANRUG 5km

For the fourth year in a row, the Regional 5km championships were held in the small village of Llanrug, near Caernarfon, on a warm Wednesday evening on 4th June . Organised by the local primary school with assistance from Eryri Harriers, 210 finishers proved the growing popularity of this event. In what was to become something of a family affair, the men’s race and title was won by Meirionnydd’s Gwion Roberts, the brother of last year’s winner Tomos. He finished in 16:07, ahead of Clubmate John Davies, who recorded 16:44. Third place went to Huw Gwyn, (Eryri) in 17:05. The women’s title went to Ann Drinkwater (Eryri) who finished in 18:27, ahead of Tomos Roberts’ wife Elliw (Eryri) who recorded 18:50 taking the F35 gold in the process and edging Eryri’s Tinka Vinks, who ran 18:51 for silver senior woman.

Colshaw Hall 10km, Inter County Match 2025

The 2025 Inter County series finally got under way with the first match at the Colshaw Hall 10km in Cheshire on Sunday 15th June. Following the resignation of Shropshire’s team manager last year, and no new appointment having been made so far, this year the series will be reduced to 3 races (the other 2 will be at Caernarfon (N. Wales) and Newcastle (Staffs).

Set in the grounds of a formerly stately home, the event had drawn some very fast men and women and an impressive 929 finishers. Yet again the N. Wales teams were hit by late withdrawals, but on the positive side, this gave 3 athletes the opportunity to make their debut. The men’s team were led home by the first of those debutants Luke Burgess (Bristol and West). Luke who runs second claim for Deeside, had won the individual Borders League title earlier this year and did not disappoint leading the team home in a fine 30:59 (7th overall). Next home was Gwion Roberts (Meirionnydd). Gwion had won the Regional 5km title in Llanrug less than two weeks earlier, to add to his win in the Regional 10km championships at the Twin Piers 10km in January; he finished in 32:55 for 29th position.

David White (Buckley) was next over the line in 30th, only 6 seconds behind Gwion with 33:01 for 30th. Ben Harding (Meirionnydd) was the second of our debutants and he placed 48th in 34:01. Ted (Edd) Flynn (Wallasey) is slowly working his way back after an absence of almost 3 years from the sport and this was another chance for him to measure his progress. He finished in 34:19 for 51st spot. Scott Nixon is an athlete dogged by bad luck lately. Having worked his way back towards where he was before a recurring injury had limited his performances, his family were struck by a sickness bug in the days before the race, and he struggled with his breathing and dropped out at the 3km point: d.n.f In the women’s race, Gemma Moore (Eryri) continued her recent fine form coming home first for us in 158th with an excellent 38:03. Our third debutant was Anna Drinkwater (Eryri), who like Gwion, had won the Regional 5km title at Llanrug and she finished in 186th with a fine 38:59. Emma Alofs (Cybi) who is becoming something of a fixture in the team, finished in 234th with 40:06. Rachel Shipley (Abergele) was 252nd in 41:03, and the ever-reliable Jane Doughton—who only came into the team 4 days before the race- was 311th in 43:09.
