Regional 10km Championships Within The Caenarfon Race 20 August 2023
For the second successive year, the Regional 10km championships were held in historic Caernarfon with the race starting on the opposite bank to the impressive castle. The day was cloudy but dry, with occasional gusts of wind, which fortunately were less of a problem than the day before in Tywyn where the annual Race the Train’s large marquee had to be dismantled before gale-force winds blew it away.

At the start a group of around seven men were grouped tightly together until the first hill, where eventual winner Scott Nixon (Wrexham), opened a short gap between himself, Clubmate James Yarwood, Cybi Striders’ Gavin Stuart and Jonathan Kettle (NWRRC). The lead gradually extended, with Yarwood and Kettle falling behind and Nixon finishing with a six second margin from Stuart. Having missed last month’s Inter Region 10km championships (I.R.C.) through work duties, Nixon was delighted with his win and his tactics during the race.

The women’s race, while still competitive, was decided much earlier in the event as eventual winner Amie Smith (Cheshire Dragons) opened a comfortable gap over Anna Drinkwater (Eryri) and Rachel Shipley (Abergele) which she extended to 61 seconds at the finish line. Smith, who took bronze at the previously mentioned I.R.C., said after the race that she feels she is finally gaining full fitness and felt that her pre-race plan had gone as well as she had hoped. The race also saw the return of two women who had been missing from races recently: Elliw Haf (Eryri), who won the F35 category only months after the birth of her second child, and Deestriders’ Jay Jennions whose long-term injury required surgery, and this was her first competitive race since – she was delighted with gold in the F40 category.
