North Wales faced strong, international competition in the Vanoni Relay races in Morbegno, Italy on Sunday 27th October. The women’s race (5km/248m) had a much earlier start of 10:30am with Eden O’Dea (Deeside AC) running the first leg for North Wales and found the steep technical descent not to her liking handing over to Beth Rawlinson (Wolverhampton & Bilston) in a time of 29:08. Beth ran well to claw back several positions to finish in an individual time of 25:13 and overall team time of 54:21 to finish 13th team out of the 53 teams competing.
The men’s race (7,250m/435m) was scheduled to start at 2pm with Matthew Roberts (Calder Valley) running the first leg for North Wales but due to a timing malfunction which incorporated a false start and a delay while the leading runners returned to the start line after already running up to 500mtrs including Matt! The race eventually started at 2:15pm on the tough and technical course, Matt ran well to hand over to Gavin Roberts (Calder Valley) in a time of 33:51, Gavin was not far off Matt’s time (34:28) in handing over to Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers) to complete the anchor leg for North Wales finishing in a time of 32:29 and an overall team time of 1:40:49 to finish 16th out of the 151 teams competing.
Overall, an excellent experience for everyone competing in a high class European international mountain running event run in a fantastic atmosphere.
Thank you to our hosts: CSI Morbegno and the people of the region for being so friendly and welcoming.
ARWEL LEWIS
