Selection Criteria For North Wales
Representative Road Running Matches
November 2025
- WELSH INTER REGION 10 km CHAMPIONSHIPSFunded from the annual grant from Welsh Athletics and specifically allocated to the Regional road running budget.
The format for this event has changed several times in recent years and in 2025, each Regional team consisted of 6 men and 6 women, the first 4 men and women to finish being the scorers. This version of the event does not preclude the inclusion of master runners (athletes aged over 35). However the inclusion of specific master teams depends on the decision of the 4 Regions each year; previously the format for these has been 4 men and 4 women, the first 3 men and women to finish being the scorers.
Qualifying criteria: The fastest male and female runners according to (a) availability and (b) times recorded in Licenced road races within the previous 12 months, as per The Power of Ten website. Master athletes may be included in the senior team provided they qualify based on these criteria. Note: athletes returning from injury must prove their fitness by achieving the required standard prior to selection.
- MAJOR INVITATIONS TO ELITE LEVEL EVENTSFunded according to the invitation, the number of men and women in teams will be decided based on the competition, and funding will come from the NWRAC annual road running budget if funds allow.
For the Inter-Area/County match within the Telford 10km race, funding will come from the annual grant from Welsh Athletics and specifically allocated to the Regional road running budget. The team consists of 5 men and 5 women, the first 3 men and women to finish being the scorers. NB: athletes aged over 35 will be included provided their fastest time places them in the top 5 for selection.
Qualifying criteria Selection will be based on (a) availability and (b) the fastest times recorded during the period 1st November to the 31st of October the following year, as shown on the Power of Ten website. The slowest athletes based on such times will be the fifth man and woman, and in line with the race organisers rules, designated as “travelling reserve” and will not score in the match unless another member of the team fails to finish.
- “FRIENDLY” INTER-COUNTY MATCHES
These matches are intended to assist the development of promising athletes and give them the experience of competing at a higher level against unfamiliar athletes, and at new venues. There are 3 matches in each calendar year: in Cheshire, Staffordshire and in North Wales.
Qualifying criteria Athletes that may qualify for selection would include: (a) athletes under 23 years of age (b) (athletes returning from injury or an absence from the sport (e.g. childbirth) (c) those who have run below 34 minutes for men and 42 minutes for women, in a Licenced 10km race in the current year and (d) those who have run below 60 minutes for men and 70m minutes for women in a 10 miles race, in the current year.
Teams will consist of 6 men and 6 women, with the first 4 men and women to finish being the scorers.
At the time of writing, (November 2025), there is no current funding for these events, so selected athletes will be responsible for paying their own entry fees.
- Regional vests: each selected athlete that has not run previously for North Wales will be required to buy his/her vest. These are available to purchase on our website (northwalesathletics.co.uk/kit/)
- At the time of writing they cost £20 per unit.
