Hall Of Fame – Reg Burke (Deceased)
Reg Burke passed away on 6th December 2024, aged 85 years. He was a much loved and respected athletics coach for Wrexham Athletics Club, a Club Committee member from 1981, Club President from 2018-2023 and was made a Life Member in 2008.
Reg was at his best when coaching youngsters who just loved him so much; he continued coaching until last year. He was also a great team manager and the successes bear testimony. He coached at schools and at Wrexham AC, but also Colwyn Bay and Bangor University. He also coached and co-ordinated in the Sportshall League and was team manager for Wrexham AC Ladies Team from 1986.
In 2006 he was awarded Welsh Development Coach of the Year and in 2011 was awarded the Welsh Athletics Meritorious Award. He coached 4 athletes who competed in the Commonwealth Games. Over the years he coached and encouraged hundreds of young athletes with many going on to compete at national and international level. He was always friendly and welcoming especially in the 1980s and 1990s when the Wrexham Ladies were winning the Welsh League.
He was also involved in raising funds for Sports Aid Foundation. This fundraising work and his community activity through volunteering work at the athletics club led to his employers, British Gas, nominating him for the British Empire Medal and he was awarded this is 1990. He was obviously also well liked and respected by his employers.
Reg leaves his wife Marilyn, children David & Lisha and grandchildren.
